Introduction

The Diploma in Medical Sciences (DMS) is an undergraduate academic programme that forms the essence of the scientific basis in human body system. The programme is aimed to provide candidates with the knowledge, skills and attitude to enable them to contribute to future progress in understanding, diagnosing and caring for human in wellness and in disease. The graduates from this programme may also further their studies towards bachelor, masters, doctorate level or pursue a professional degree in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy through MSU's International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).

Career Prospects

Graduates will be able to further pursue in Medicine, or Dentistry in various university worldwide. With the paradigm shift towards graduate entry for Medical schools globally, this programme proved to be pertinent and essential for students to pave their way to do medicine or dentistry. Graduates not intending to pursue in Medicine will find themselves better opportunity to be selected and play managerial posts in the workforce especially when they already have professional diploma qualifications eg. Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, Diploma in Nursing, Diploma in Medical Assistant, Diploma in Physiotherapy etc.


Those who have interest in education will find ample opportunities to be recruited as tutors in health related education programmes. They could also venture into health journalism and embark into medical researches as Research Assistants.


Core Subject Description

DMS is conducted over a period of 3 years. The first two years offer a broad curriculum in the relevant scientific disciplines related to basic human body system. The teaching-learning activity is geared into substantially describing and discovering how the different human systems (e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, gastro-intestinal tract) work, relating whole-body aspects of normal states as well as the environmental factors which affecting the human health (eg: microbiology, parasitology). Emphasis on communication and 'soft' skills, integrity and attitude are also evident by the occurrence of subjects related to ethics, morals and the English language.


In the final year, the students are exposed to the clinical related medicine that touch on processing and analyzing biological specimen that beneficial for them in the future study or industry. Clinical training undertaken would provide the appropriate platform for the candidates' acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitude pertinent to the areas of medical science of the candidates' interests.


Course Features and Benefits

This program focus on knowledge on anatomy and function of human system where the graduate of this program are qualified to progress to bachelor in Medical Sciences Program in year two with study exemption for the first year which also bridge them to MBBS program through the graduate entry in order to achieve the students' passion to be a doctor and serve people.


Apart from that, the candidates are introduced to the medical ethic, sociology and psychology in order to prepare them for their future career.


The students registered for this program are required to fulfill activities which have been planned for them trough out the study duration. These activities will polish their soft skill (eg: communication skills, leadership skills and teamwork) while having fun participating the activities. These activities include community service activities, mentoring activities, industrial linkage activities and also international exposure. These activities will give them great exposure to the medical industry locally and globally.


Carrier Opportunities

Graduate who hold this certificate are qualified to work as technician in medical industry, laboratory technician. Those who keen into medical program have good opportunity to pursue study in Bachelor in Medical Sciences (Hons.) before embarking to MBBS in the phase three.
